Duterte orders gov’t offices, public schools to display photos and paintings of heroes instead of officials

Malacañang Palace ordered all government agencies including public schools to display all forms of visual representation from paintings to photos of our Philippine national heroes in the offices instead of photos of the public officials.

Memorandum Circular No. 25 signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on September 15 said that it is to strengthen the people's nationalism, love of country and respect for heroes and promote "social consciousness and patriotism."

"It is the policy of the state to promote and popularize the nation's historical and cultural heritage," the memorandum circular said.

"The state shall provide the means to strengthen the people's nationalism, love of country, and respect for its heroes by emphasizing the importance of Philippine national and local history jn the daily life of the Filipinos, with the objective of raising social consciousness and patriotism," it added.

Last July 18, President Duterte already mentioned it on his speech. Duterte cited that he would issue an order prohibiting the display of his photos in all government offices.

"Sa Davao, when I was mayor, I prohibited the display of my picture and I told the decks there to display instead the pictures of our heroes," the president said.

"I intend to also issue a decree, ipatanggal ko iyong mga litrato namin (I will have our photos removed)," Duterte said.

"Nabuang man iyong mga ganoon na tao (These people are silly). Put your family photos in your living room," he added.

Here's the list included of the Philippine heroes identified by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines:
  • Jose Rizal
  • Andres Bonifacio
  • Emilio Aguinaldo
  • Apolinario Mabini
  • Marcelo del Pilar
  • Juan Luna
  • Melchora Aquino
  • Gabriela Silang
  • Lapu-Lapu
  • F. Jose Burgos
  • Fr. Mariano Gomez
  • Fr. Jacinto Zamora
  • Emilio Jacinto
  • Jose Abad Santos
