Journalist on President Duterte: I saw a man who had such deep respect for the Filipino

A journalist of Manila Bulletin shared his thoughts about President Rodrigo Duterte during his state visit in Singapore last week.

Arnel Patawaran made a meaningful description about Duterte. How he sees him as a leader of the Philippines.

In the beginning of his post, he shared the post of his OFW friend who wrote uplifting words about Duterte and so, he decided to express his own view.

He cited the characteristic of the president that he wanted and it seems, he saw it all to Duterte. The kind-hearted man who love his country and fellow Filipino and the man who walk his talk.

An OFW friend in Singapore posted this morning about President Duterte's Singapore visit. This is what she had to say.

---Good morning people! Already monitoring the spin from all sides on last night's "discussion", which I heard in full, with all its colour, controversy and common sense. I also personally witnessed the emotions, political leanings and social concerns of the Filipino community (where he won an indisputable majority from an incredibly DIVERSE working population) in Singapore.

Last night was eye opening (UNDERSTATEMENT of the year), heartwarming (the crowd... oh, the CROWD... it was more rock concert than Presidential visit), also personally painful (I get what he's saying, I just refuse to accept it and that's my right because I had my own experience with the matter and it's MY NON-NEGOTIABLE), but all-in-all an experience that I will reflect on and use to better myself (I shall be more assertive of my rights as a Filipino citizen), my family (I am more determined to protect it from all the "evils" that surround us and hell yeah, you touch my kids and I will break your face!) and my community (focus on helping the micro-entrepreneurs grow - support small businesses! - and contribute to the empowerment of my fellow OFWs).

It's weird that sometimes in my little circle I feel I have to hold back my opinion on the good and the promise that I see in President Duterte. But this is what I wrote in my friend's comment box:

Thank you for putting into words exactly what I saw and heard at his miting de avance, where I cringed at every cussword, shook my head at every unfinished sentence that trailed off into a cussword or some cheap, crass, unrefined joke... Never once did I clap my hands or cheer him on. I just stood there and listened. And I thought I saw a man who had such deep respect for the Filipino, particularly the Filipino faceless, nameless, powerless, unspoken for. I think I decided I didn't want a "presidentiable," a president who knew everything. I wanted a man who could move this country, who could make the people of this country realize what they deserved, what was in their rights to achieve, a man who could say, "I don't care what you think, I'll do what I think is best. I may be wrong, if I am, so sue me!" We have always known what is wrong with our country, but our leaders lacked not the knowhow, not the expertise, not the wisdom, not the right words or gestures, not the personal charm, but the political will, the willingness to be lynched, unliked, insulted by the forces that have ruled this country for centuries. I wanted a man who by inspiration alone could transfer the power to make this country proud again from the hands of the few to the hands of the many. I wanted a man who could re-ignite the Filipino in us or at least make us care enough that a few rich men (and their families and friends and employees) do not a country make.
