House panel approves reimposition of death penalty

The House of Representatives' justice committee approved the proposal of the death penalty bill.

It is expected to start soon the deliberation as the sub-panel agreed on the bill to reinstate it.

As indicated by the report, there were 6 congressmen voted in favor of the changed proposition with a substitute discipline for crimes which are considered heinous such as illegal drugs, murder, rape, arson, and kidnapping.

While, there were 5  who voted to a have the death penalty only for drug-related offenses.

If the mother committee would approve as well, it would be brought to the plenary for debates.

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said this is one of the House priority measures.

The Death Penalty was banned in the year 2006 under Arroyo's admin when she signed Republic Act 9340. It was then downgraded to reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment.
