Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Ronald dela Rosa defended police officers facing criticisms because of drug-related killings.
(There are those who criticize our operations in the war against drugs. We cannot just wait for them to kill us. We need to fight back for our own sake.)
This statement was made during the wake SPO4 Edgar Bumugat who was killed while trying to serve an arrest warrant for a murder suspect. Dela Rosa was joined by Bumagat’s wife and daughter.
Eh ang pulis nagtratrabaho lang…Tanggap namin na kami ay mamamatay (I want you to know the feeling of a family who has lost the head of a family. The cop is only doing his job. We know that we can die) any time in the course of us performing our job," he added
More than 400 drug suspects have been slain because of supposedly having fought back against law enforcers.
The murder suspect, Angelo Tampos, reportedly shot SPO4 Bumagat, forcing policemen to shoot back and killing Tampos in the process. However, according to witnesses at the crime scene, the slain police officerhad already been laying on the ground before they entered the suspect’s home.
