DOST launch free wifi nationwide by year-end
According to Science and Technology Undersecretary Louis Napoleon Casambre on Tuesday said they are preparing to roll out free Wi-Fi service nationwide by end of the end.
Casambre said around 93 percent may have access of free wifi. The free wifi internet access will install in public areas such as town plazas, parks, and government office.
The free WiFi in Metro Manila includes Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City, the Philippine Coconut Authority, Social Security System office, Land Transportation Office, and at the Rizal Park in Manila.
"'Yung remaining 7 percent, 'yan 'yung mahirap pasukin like 'yung Turtle Island, but we will look for other solutions for them," Casambre said.
The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Office will have a budget of P3.2 billion for 2017 to fund the free Wi-Fi service.
Globe and Smart Communications Inc., have already expressed their support for the project.
Casambre said that free wifi daily usage will limit to 50MB. He said it will help to manage the estimated 117,000 internet users.
ICT is hoping that extending the free Wi-Fi service will improve the quality of telecom products.
