Bishop Villegas to Duterte: 'We are not your enemy'
On President Rodrigo Duterte inauguration ceremony on Thursday, Archbishop Socrates Villegas, the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), consoled him of the Church's backing.
Villegas said the Church will give their full support to Duterte administration, yet will keep a vigilant gaze amid his term.
The bishop additionally communicated trust that Duterte would not see the Church as an enemy on occassions when the Church and the administration couldn't concur on specific issues.
Amid the presidential campaign and Duterte won, he still had unequivocally scrutinized the Catholic Church, saying he will uncover the affirmed privileged insights and sins of the pastorate.
Duterte even reported a date, a day prior to his planned suspicion into office that he would uncover the affirmed sins but no such disclosure was made.
Bishop Villegas took the inverse way, demanding staying noiseless in the midst of Duterte's assaults against the Church.
In an announcement entitled "Understanding Silence," Villegas said, "There is virtue in silence. There is virtue in speech. Wisdom is knowing when it is time for silence and when is the timing for speech. Mine is the silence of Jesus before the arrogance of Pilate," Villegas said
“Silence indeed is the language of God and only those who speak silence will be able to grasp Him.” he added.
