Mayor Duterte Nears Victory in Election


Rodrigo Duterte, a foul-mouthed anti-establishment outsider, is heading for a huge victory in the Philippine presidential elections, rattling powerful dynastic families that have ruled the island-nation for decades.

The 71-year-old mayor of the southern city of Davao had won more than 38 per cent of votes with three quarters of
unofficial votes counted, crushing his nearest rival Grace Poe with 22 per cent.

But even before the polls closed Mr Duterte called for an end to acrimony that had dominated months of campaigning.
"I would like to address myself to my opponents. These past few days have been quite virulent for all of us – the black propaganda and false accusations," he said.
